Peter will discuss his new book about the longing in all of us for authentic human connection, and the social pathologies that inevitably develop when that longing is systematically denied. He will put forward a new vision of spiritual activism that can help to build a sustained social movement capable of evolutionary social change.

Peter Gabel is the former president of New College of California and was a law professor at New College’s public-interest law school for over thirty years. He has been Editor-at-Large of Tikkun magazine for the last thirty years and is now co-chair of the Project for Integrating Spirituality, Law, and Politics. He is also currently president of the Arlene Francis Foundation for Spirit, Art and Politics in Santa Rosa, He is the author of many articles on law, politics, and social change; his previous books include The Bank Teller and Other Essays on the Politics of Meaning (Acada Books 2000); Another Way of Seeing: Essays on Transforming Law, Politics, and Culture (Quid Pro Books 2014). He received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from San Francisco State University in 2015 and has been described by Cornel West as “one of the grand prophetic voices in our day and a long-distance runner in the struggle for justice.”
